Route 225, Km. 7.5, Puerto Varas, Chile
With capacity to host a mere 8 people, unforgettable personalized service is where this luxurious country home in Chile’s gorgeous Lake District shines.
One Quincho guest expressed that “Whomever said ‘it is better to travel than arrive’ would have made an exception for Quincho.” While the trip to get to the elegantly comfortable Quincho isn’t exactly a chore (think views of gorgeous volcanoes and crystal clear lakes), when you arrive you realize that you have hit a whole new level of pleasure. Quincho is a mere 10 minutes from the lakeside tourist city of Puerto Varas, and convenient airport transfers are offered from Puerto Montt. When you arrive at the discreet gate, you will know that you are entering a place that values its privacy. There is not even a sign that states you are arriving at a hotel – it seems as though you are arriving at someone’s private house. This sense only deepens once you cross through the 8 acre estate and step foot through the door of the massive country home that was built as a personal residence in 1998.
Something that sets the Quincho staff apart is its ability to come across as a team. In other larger hotels, it seems that reception has no communication with the kitchen, and the kitchen certainly couldn’t tell you who the guides are. At Quincho, it feels like you have a highly organized staff that works together flawlessly to make sure that all of your needs are met. The chef will take time to meet you upon arrival, offer you a welcome cocktail taken leisurely in front of the big open fire in the living room with panoramic views of Lake Llanquihue and Osorno Volcano, and he will get on board with any requests or special dietary requirements that you have. You can arrange any tailor-made excursion you want to take, including rafting, sea kayaking, trekking, boating, day trips to Chiloe island to see penguins, and horseback riding, all with a person who will be your private guide throughout your entire stay. Helicopter flights and yacht excursions can even be arranged.
The sweet-as-can-be manager maintains a strong presence to make sure that everything goes according to (or better than) how you imagined. The staff is nothing if not adaptable to your personal style and needs. If you want intense, attentive service, it’s no problem. If you prefer to be left alone, they will back off and let you know how to contact them if you need anything. Many Quincho guests arrive by enthusiastic word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and it is easy to see why.
You will be taken to your spacious suite, which will have lots of closet space (with details such as hand-knit socks to lounge in), a massive bathroom with a tub supplied with bath salts and candles, stunning lake views, a LCD television, and an iPod docking station. Especially notable is the Bandurria suite, which offers almost 750 square feet of space, some of the best views, a double-sized Jacuzzi tub, and a huge walk-in closet. The Chucao suite has a separate office space within the suite. Fresh fruit and sparkling water is constantly supplied for you no matter which suite you choose. And if you did not bring a portable computer to take advantage of the Wi-fi, one will happily be loaned to you.
One thing that guests constantly praise Quincho for is its cuisine. If you have a passion for cooking, you will be interested in knowing that you are welcome in the kitchen at any time. If you want, you are invited to go along with the chef as he does his shopping at the markets in the morning, and you can the work alongside him as much or as little as you like preparing the food. As many ingredients as possible are sourced locally, including free range eggs, veggies from the on-site garden, and fish from the local fisherman. Only the top Chilean wines are served.
Breakfast is included in the room rate, but lunch and dinner are $70 more each. Once you see the quantity and quality of food given, you will happily pay, realizing it would be next to impossible to find better food anywhere else in town. If you choose to take an excursion, an exquisite picnic lunch of perhaps a fresh quiche and garden salad, to be washed down with a bottle of crisp Cabernet Sauvignon, will be lovingly packed up for you by the staff.
Quincho is a place that attracts an international crowd who come looking for a low-profile, quiet stay—the opposite of the experience in many Puerto Varas hotels with their revolving doors of tour groups there for a night. To maintain the tranquil atmosphere it is not recommended to bring children, unless you plan on renting out all four suites for your family. Whether you want to fill your days with vigorous outdoor activities and crash, exhausted, in your massive bed piled high with blankets at night, or you prefer to do nothing more than curl up all day long next to the fireplace with a book and a bottle of delicious wine, Quincho Country Home is the perfect home base in the Lakes District. You can be guaranteed that the staff, which will probably seem like family by the time you leave, will do everything in their power to ensure you an absolutely memorable stay.
