Colonia Palmira, Avenida República del Perú, No. 2115, Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Boasting a rare blend of rustic chic and unadulterated luxury, the capital's only boutique hotel is a spectacular showcase for the artisanship of a proud country, while creating a "home away from home" for the discriminating guest.
Converted from a verdant family home into a small hotel more than ten years ago by a family with a vision, Hotel Portal del Angel is conveniently situated in a quiet street just a couple of minutes from Tegucigalpa's main road—Boulevard Morazan. Although located a little further away from "downtown"––the locality of most of the plazas, churches and museums of the city––the Portal del Angel provides a private shuttle service to accommodate your varied fancies, from shopping trips to cultural excursions and business meetings.
It is the small touches that count in this hotel. The charming paintings and handicrafts by Honduran artists lining the corridors, cigars and vintage wines on tap, and the manner in which visitors are welcomed as part of the family all succeed in creating a comfortable intimacy for you with their surroundings. Furthermore, the hotel's policy of no music and no bar after 10pm ensures that guests will always enjoy peaceful evenings in an otherwise noisy and bustling city.
The building facade is the only element that lets this exquisite hotel down. The building sitting behind the wrought–iron gates appears tired and run–down, which is deceptive given the delicate beauty that lies within. The change in mood is instantaneous as one enters the discrete lobby, adorned with purple flowers and ethereal angels, designed by artisans from the country's flower–producing districts. The traditional iron and glass doors to the right of the lobby open out into a small patio dining area. Surrounded by tropical foliage and bright hibiscus flowers, patio heaters and elegant lanterns, the terrace is ideal to enjoy cozy lunches and balmy evenings.
Past the lobby is the indoor dining area, lavishly decorated with traditional handicrafts of the Honduran Lenca people. The indigenous interior perfectly matches the culinary delights that embellish the menu. Typical Honduran food is enmeshed with a European influence––a combination that attracts refined diners from across the country. Leading out from the restaurant is a further tranquil terraced area with a deep azure swimming pool.
Suites and bedrooms are a delight, complete with all the opulence one expects from a luxury hotel whilst maintaining a comfortable rustic charm. Intricately carved dark wood bedframes encase commodious orthopedic mattresses, surprising works of art are discovered in hidden nooks and crannies, and serene balconies ensure a little more privacy. Each room is equipped with hardwood floors and the suites have a separate sitting area.
The Portal del Angel is a graceful hotel that is a welcome antidote to the mostly charmless chain hotels in the area. When the front facade is remodeled, with plans to create fountains and angels in a charismatic courtyard, the entrance will be truly worthy of the splendid hotel within. The unique allure of the Portal del Angel is that it also functions as a living gallery, with everything up for sale. It is not uncommon for guests to fall in love with a bed or a painting or handicraft. As visitors desire, the hotel will organize shipping and delivery of your newly acquired pieces of Honduran craftsmanship.
