The luxury travel scene in Peru has taken a major upswing in the past few decade and the selection of luxury hotels and resorts keeps getting better. Peru is on its way to becoming the best-equipped country in South America for upscale travelers, with an ever-increasing number of true five-star hotels that really deliver. When the Orient-Express company took over the train system in Peru and opened up its luxury train lines, this coincided with new hotel developments in Lima, Machu Picchu, Cusco, and the Colca Canyon. With one of the world's top upscale hotel chains moving in, competitors soon needed to make major improvements or get left behind. So they did.
The result is that discerning travelers can find some of the best lodging choices in South America in Peru and in several areas there are two, three, or four great luxury hotels or resorts competing for your business.
Most of this development is still mainly limited to the main tourist stops on a well-worn path, but several new projects in less-visited areas are encouraging. In the past few years new and notable luxe hotels have opened in the Colca Canyon, Puno, and Paracas, plus the options keep getting better in Arequipa and the Sacred Valley.
