In a sea of similar places to stay on beaches of varying quality, we showcase the best of the best Puerto Vallarta luxury resorts and those hotels north and south of the gateway to the region.
The Pacific Coast of Mexico that extends north and south from Puerto Vallarta is a varied playground that moves back and forth from seclusion to nightlife, high-rises to beach huts. Much of it is geared to the same kind of mass tourism you find on the opposite side of the country, but in Punta de Mita, the Riviera Nayarit, and Costalegre you find some of the best 5-star luxury hotels in all of Mexico. There are international chain standouts like Four Seasons, St. Regis, and W, as well as fine local boutique properties in Puerto Vallarta and on secluded beaches that have a real sense of place.
This Puerto Vallarta region is full of resort superlatives. You could easily argue that it contains the best Mexican all–inclusive chain (Grand Velas), some of the best golf resorts (Four Seasons and St. Regis), and the best resort for true privacy (Las Alamandas). Plus Hacienda San Angel, Casa Kimberly, and Casa de Mita are some of Mexico's best–run boutique hotels in a resort region. Puerto Vallarta has excellent air connections with the USA, Canada, and elsewhere in Mexico, so it's easy to get here for your Mexican beach getaway. Plus there are plenty of adventure activities away from the resorts, on and off the water.
We have detailed reviews of all of the best Puerto Vallarta luxury hotels and resorts, with enough variety to please any upscale traveler type looking for the best this Jalisco and Riviera Nayarit region has to offer. If you're movie stars trying to escape the cameras, honeymooners looking for a romantic escape, or a family traveling in style, we filter out the noise for you and help you find that perfect luxury hotel or resort in Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita, the Riviera Nayarit, and Costalegre.

What is the difference between Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit?
For the average visitor, there is no difference between these two areas since the hotels and houses sprawl in a continuous line from Mismaloya south of Puerto Vallarta to Punta de Mita in Nayarit. They were once on a different time zone, which was crazy confusing, but no more. The different designations are because the areas are in two different states, with two different governments and tourism boards.
Puerto Vallarta proper extends through the marina area where the Westin and Casa Velas are, but then a bit past the airport there's a river separating the two states and after that you are in Nayarit state, not Jalisco. So the Riviera Nayarit luxury resorts, including those around the Punta de Mita Peninsula, are not in Puerto Vallarta technically, even though they do use that airport.
