Like twin sisters with very different personalities, the Pacific Coast towns of Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa show very different sides of Mexico. Sure, both are resort destinations in their own right, but while Zihuatanejo still manages to hang onto its former funky fishing village vibe—at least in spirit—Ixtapa is mostly a high-rise resort hotel scene.
Now cruise ship passengers pour into Zihuatanejo, but height restrictions still keep the overbuilding in check. The two hotels we feature there—Casa que Canta and Viceroy Zihuatanejo (formerly known as Tides Zihuatanejo)—consistently show up on magazine "Best Resorts in Mexico" lists. One is perched on a hill, the other sprawling along the area's best beach.
Previously there wasn't much for luxury travelers to get excited about in mass–market Ixtapa, but that all changed with the opening of Capella Ixtapa. This one will surely be joining the others in those best–of rankings. With three truly great pampering resorts to choose from, this destination should get onto your to–do list sometime soon.
